What the garden grows
Here’s a list of what I have growing around the house. Not that I am an expert by any means, but if you have a question, let me know.
Between the fence and the driveway:
- Pink Pewter Lamium
- A bit of White Nancy Lamium
- Purple Coneflower (maybe…maybe not)
- Bressingham Heuchera — coral bells. However these bells never amount to much.
- Delta Snow Phlox (seems to be spreading)
- East Friesland Salvia (not much left now since the winter of 2007-2008 )
- Oertel’s Rose Yarrow
- Coronation Gold Yarrow (reeaalllly struggling early summer 2008. 2009: I am going to dig it up and move it. )
- Autumn Fire Sedum
- Autumn Joy Sedum
- Crater Lake Blue Veronica (2009: just hanging on)
- Sunny Border Blue Veronica (nearly vanished…wah! )
- Eventide Aster
- Alma Potchke Aster
- Agatha Dianthus
- Walker’s Low Nepeta (moving to side of garage)
- Rudbeckia fulgida ‘Goldsturm’ – Blackeyed Susans (becoming somewhat of a thug. Fall of 2008 I had DH dig it out to nearly extinction — messing with my false indigo! )
- Panicum virgatum Rotstrahlbusch — it’s a switchgrass
- Rudibeckia laciniata Gold Drop (cutleaf coneflower, “outhouse flower” )
- Cannas - red/orange (not for 2008 )
- “Pampas” grass — not sure of the variety and may have been a huge mistake…(a HUGE mistake)
- False indigo
Side garden:
- Big or Better Boy tomatoes — never can remember which
- Rhubarb
- Zucchini
- Jersey Giant Asparagus (2009 has been a most excellent year!)
- 2009: radishes, onions and cilantro
Along the garage:
- Walker’s Low Nepeta
Next to patio:
- Wood hyacinths
- Pink Pewter Lamium
- Old Fashion Hollyhocks from Southern Cousin’s grandfather’s farm in Kentucky
- White Double Hollyhock from Ace Hardware…
- Rudbeckia fulgida ‘Goldsturm’ (needs to be moved)
- Joe Pye ‘Gateway,‘ but still a bit too big *Update: I cut Joe down by half the middle of June — he looks a lot better in August. He’s a nice height and has lots of blooms and not near as floppy.
- Nasty Star of Bethlehem!
- Crocus
Along the driveway along the house:
- Becky Daisy
- Sedum Kamtschaticum ‘Stonecrop’ (2009: severely thinned out)
- Rudbekia Triloba — has been getting all mildewy the last couple years — and seems to be mutating. Really. (pulling this out in 2008 — the mildew problem won’t go away)
- Purple Coneflower
- Solidaster Lemore — moved this one three times until it was satisfied where it was living. (moved it AGAIN in 2008; still seems happy)
- Walker’s Low Nepeta
- Blackoil Sunflowers (compliments of the bird feeder)
- Sempervivum Silverine (Hen-and-Chicks — a dusty ruby/silver color)
- Nasty Star of Bethlehem!
In front of the house, south end:
- Russian Sage – Perovskia Atriplicifolia (not particularly healthy in 2008; not real healthy in 2009 )
- Wild Violets (in profusion) – (mulched over these in 2008 — too prolific!)
- Sedum Fulda Glow (2009: transplanted some elsewhere; mulched over)
- Sedum Kamtschaticum ‘Stonecrop’ (needs moved/ 2009: mulched over)
- Pink Pewter Lamium
- Yellow Columbine -Dragonfly Hybrid. This one is a bit dainty for some reason, but strong stemmed.
- Soapwort – Saponaria Ocymoides
- Camassia Blue Melody
- Some sort of low growing juniper — came with the house. (2009: poor things have juniper tip blight)
- 2008: moved some Becky daisy, purple coneflower, Golden Gain coreopsis and filled in with some pansies.
In front of the house, north end:
- Pink Pewter Lamium
- Lady’s Mantle
- Russian sage (2009: needs moved to make way for the ninebark)
- Joe Pye (needs moved)
- French hollyhocks from Southern Cousin (Mulched over — got out of control…wah!)
- May Night Salvia (needs moved; ninebark is getting big)
- Golden Gain Coreopsis (ditto)
- Annie Hall Thyme
- Wild Pansy
- Husker’s Red Penstemon (2009: attacked by spittle bugs)
- Summerwine Ninebark bush It is the prettiest thing!
- Hibiscus Disco something (I would like to move it…)
- Fireworks Goldenrod (l love this plant! 2009: also attacked by spittle bugs!)
- Camassia Blue Melody
- Coreopsis American Dream (2009: all but vanished…transplanted to northside of house)
- 2009: added something I can’t remember the name of! Good grief…oh, I think it is a low growing phlox. Sheesh!
North side of house:
- Lady’s Mantle
- McKana Hybrid Columbine
- Bells of Scotland - Campanula rotundafolia olympica (disappeared except for a bit growing in a crack in the sidewalk)
- Coreopsis American Dream
- Poison Ivy…! Soon to be pulled…
- Peach Blossom Astilbe
- Artemisia Silver Brocade (just a teenie bit left. 2009: all gone…)
- Sorbet Peony
- Japanese Painted Fern
- Nora Barlow Columbine
- Dragonfly Hybrid Columbine (white with very pale yellow “trumpet” and long spurs — gorgeous!)
- Heuchera Regina – now these coral bells are pretty!
- Grape Hyacinth — why do I always think of Hyacinth Bucket (BOO-KAY)…?
- Aruncus Zweiweltenkind - Goat’s Beard
- Wild violets (2008: really worked at digging these up)
- Beedle’s White Lamium — pretty, but just barely hanging on. Seems to be fussy. Or is being attacked by an unknown assailant.
- Added in 2008: another pink coreopsis, early sunrise coreopsis, dianthus
- Nora Barlow columbine. I thought it was a goner in 2008, but it’s back in 2009.
- Added in 2009: jacob’s ladder and golden moneywort – yeah, I’ll be sorry about that…
Lots of stuff that didn’t make it through the years…off the top of my head:
- Subzero Rose Arctic Blaze or Fire — something like that. Had about three pitiful blooms (thanks for trying though!) before its first winter here did it in.
- Handkerchief Iris — about forgot about this one. Think the squirrel might have gotten it…or the gardener goofed.
- Assorted daffodils — again, the squirrel or I goofed big time on these. Don’t have much luck with bulbs.
- Windflowers
- St. John’s Wort - its demise taught me to be more diligent about getting plants for the zone they could survive in.
- Armeria, or Dwarf Sea Thrift — gee, and it was cute too. Sigh!
- Woody nightshade. It and the juniper were the ONLY landscaping thing that came with the house. We even tried to tame the nightshade until we figured out what it was…and dug every bit of it up. Tame it…right!
- Coreopsis Early Sunrise…and it was sooo pretty against the crater lake blue veronica. Not sure why it quit on me. Two years — then pffft!
- Scabiosa butterfly blue and also the pink variety… I really tried to like these, but they didn’t do much for my garden.
- Agatha Dianthus (vanished…really crying now!)
- Soapwort - Saponaria Ocymoides (didn’t survive 2007-2008 winter)
- Annie Hall Thyme (disappeared during the winter of 07-08…poor Annie!)
- Nora Barlow Columbine (guess she went with Annie…2009: She’s baaack!)
- Beedle’s White Lamium (didn’t survive 2007-2008 winter)
